DO YOUR OWN FINISHING...THE BAREWOOD WAY
Supplies: 150 and 400 grit sandpaper,
foam polybrushes, stain, polyeurthane or clearthane, tack cloth and paper towels
1. Remove all doors, drawers (don't forget
to number them!) and hardware from your piece of furniture.
2. Sand your entire piece of furniture with 150 grit sandpaper
to prepare the surface for staining.
3. Using a foam polybrush (avoids leaving streaks like bristle
brushes), generously apply stain and wipe off the excess with a soft cloth
or Viva paper towels. If you want the color to be deeper or richer,
apply a second coat of stain after the first has dried.
4. Using a foam polybrush, apply the first coat of polyeurthane
(better for furniture with big flat surfaces: tables, chests of
drawers, etc.) or clearthane (better for chairs and stools), being careful
of dripping (too much on your brush) and bubbling (pressing too hard with
your brush)
5. After drying for about one day, use 400 or 600 grit sandpaper
lightly to eliminate some of the grit left by polyeurthane. Wipe off
the dust with a tack cloth.
6. Apply two more coats of polyeurthane, repeating step five
between each one.You now have a
beautifully finished piece of furniture and the satisfaction of knowing that
you did it yourself!
